Keep your mouth shut

It’s Not OK!!

no its really not…

Keep your mouth shut

just stop…

I promise, this is not a political post and I’m not talking about just politics here, nor am I pointing fingers at anyone or any political party.. Now that I got that out of the way here is what I’m worried about..I am worried for us, for our children, our grandchildren and most of all our country. What has happened to us? Why is everyone so full of hate these days? This didn’t happen over night and it isn’t just about who is in office. I haven’t felt much like writing lately and this is part of the reason why. But I decided I needed to say some things and get my feelings out.

So what happened…I truly believe a huge part of it is due to social media. I can’t even look at FB some days. I have begun limiting myself from it for periods of time and instead have been on Instagram and reading more. It’s sad because it is a way for me to keep in touch with family and friends due to me not living close to most of them anymore. FB is not the only problem, the news isn’t helping at all. Remember when the evening news was just that…news! No one ever gave an opinion nor was it in anyway slanted towards any one side or the beliefs of the newscaster. I long for the good old days to be back again.

I really believe  people say things on social media they never would say in real life to anyone. I even see a post and think to myself..aw this is such a sweet post…and then read the comments and someone has said something nasty and mean spirited. I think wow, where did that even come from and why would someone post that… What makes someone do that? I have no answer…I am sorry we have come to this..

”A loving heart is the truest wisdom.” ~ Charles Dickens

Here’s a thought…It’s not ok to bully or make fun of people. Anyone..We teach our kids and grandkids this and then adults are doing this. Do they realize what they are doing or do they just go along with the crowd? Making fun of anyone is not OK! I have seen people I know make fun of someone and I think, do I really know this person? Maybe it was done in jest, but I’m pretty sure the person being made fun of doesn’t think it’s funny.

My grandfather was a Sunday School teacher and he taught all of us to be kind..always be kind, no matter what. He was the kindest, sweetest man I ever knew. He never had a bad thing to say about anyone and I learned a lot from him. He taught us all to love one another and not to hate. He told us to treat people the way we want to be treated.

I have tried to live by my grandfathers teachings. I dont always get there and some times I slip up. I am human after all. But for the most part I try to show kindness and love. You know it is one thing to say something in the comfort of your home to a friend or family member but do we really need to put the harsh words out there for all to see? What does that accomplish? It only breeds more hatefullness.

We are all wondering why there is so much bullying going on in schools, road rage shootings and just plain meanness these days..maybe we need to look at ourselves to see where this starts..it starts with each one of us.

”Love is the master key that opens the gates of happiness, of hatred, of jealousy, and, most easily of all, the gate of fear.”~ Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr.

I am sad at what we have become. I am sad when I walk down the street in our little town and no one bothers to even look at you or smile and say hello. I try…and sometimes I am met with a smile and a “good morning”, but more often than not, I get nothing! I remember as a child, going downtown with my mother and everyone said hello and smiled.

Can we go back to those days, back to the way we were? Can we stop all the hate? That is my question for you? I think we can. I believe there is good in the world. I post a good story every single day on FB. Believe me, some days it is hard to find one amidst all the other stuff on there. But eventually I find one. It gives me hope and shows me there is still good in the world. And I love when people I don’t even know tell me they love that I post them and look forward to them every day.

I want to believe its possible for us to rise above the hate! I believe we are better than this! My hope is for a better world for our grandchildren and their children. A world that is more filled with love than hate… We can do this. I know we can…

very upset person

I HATE Autocorrect!!!

can I tell you how much I hate it…but sometimes it’s funny…

very upset person

it truly makes me want to scream…

I needed something to make me laugh today and have been gathering these funny autocorrects for some time now…so thought I would share them with you. I hope you get a chuckle out of them. I think it’s funny how autocorrect has a dark side to it…seems to change things so they sometimes sound dirty…. It must have a sense of humor though as well….Enjoy!

  1. I was telling my friends(ok, it just changed that to “feeling” my friends) that the company I was going to be a consultant for was doing purses now too and it changed it to “dong purses”…whatever they are, I don’t want one!
  2. A friend of mine was saying she was buying her grandsons some socks and it was changed to “I always buy them some dicks.” We still laugh at that one…
  3. I was worried about a friend and in a 3 way private message to 2 other friends I sent this.. “if I don’t hear from her shortly..I’m eating her.” Well that’ll show her for not getting in touch…
  4. Another friend was texting us about her husband, Rick and it came up “Stick” instead…he will forever be known as “Stick” now…
  5. I started a Grief Group so my friends could openly talk about their loved ones in private without feeling judged…although when I texted a friend to ask if she wanted to join it..well, this is what came up. “I have a “Grease Proof.” She asked me what I had that was grease proof?
  6. Did you ever send a text or private message and it took a little while for the people you sent it too to see the error…and when they did, it was even more hilarious. I sent one to a few friends about something we were all getting…an invite or something and instead of “I got mine”…it said, “I got men.” They were all very happy for me and asked how many I got?
  7. I said I saw a woman walking her cat on a leash, which was funny in itself… but it was changed to “walking her car on a leash.” Which was even funnier…
  8. A friend fell and I wanted to text, “Aw, sorry to hear this.” It showed up as “Awesome, sorry to hear this.” At least the sorry to hear this wasn’t changed…
  9. The other day a lot of people were on FB talking about having problems with their Comcast WIFI. Someone posted…I am still having problems with my “Cervix”…I don’t know that Comcast can fix that…
  10. I didn’t receive my free donut at Dunkin Donuts on free donut day and texted my grand daughter to say that I was upset with them…I sent this…I am extremely upset with Dunkin Dog Nuts….She sent me a text back and said,  “what is this place, is it new?”…. I don’t think I want anything from that place though…
  11. On FB I saw a funny story a woman had posted that her Mother had a health problem and someone asked how she was and the woman replied… Oh she’s fine now..She just needed an “epic penis” (epi pen)… So glad it helped!
  12. I was texting a few people and said I went to a concert. They asked what concert… “Bonjovially” was my answer… It was a joyful Bon Jovi concert  though!

Hope you enjoyed this and maybe got a laugh or two out of them. It did make me smile while I was writing this…Did you ever have one of your texts changed into something funny or not so funny..let me know in the comments..

wearing leggings

Are We What We Wear?

I truly hope not….

wearing leggings

I love my leggings and wear them everywhere…

Yes, this is going to be a rant! For the love of all that’s holy, could we just stop wearing exercise clothing everywhere we go… Yes, this woman is outside, on top of a building doing her yoga…and that is fine! I can only hope she lives in this building and puts some clothing on before she goes out in public.

Recently my daughter and I were running errands and everywhere we went that day we saw women/girls in workout clothes. I use the term loosely as in my opinion, they are not really clothes. We went to a nice department store, a grocery store, and a fairly upscale restaurant. Every place we went that day we ran into women in exercise outfits.

I walk every day. I wear these outfits. I don’t go anywhere in them except to walk to and from my house. Several times I have needed to go to the grocery store and think to myself…just this once. But I can’t do it. I run upstairs and put my jeans or capris on and out I go. Why can’t I do this? Maybe it’s my age and the fact I was raised to have respect for myself and others… My daughters are the same way though, so I guess it can’t just be my age. My youngest is a yoga teacher and she does go to the store after yoga, but she wears a jacket or top that covers her little tiny tank thing. This is what bothers me the most I think. The fact that not only do these people wear active wear, it is hardly covering any part of their body. And you are in a public place, you are in a restaurant….

“Dressing well is a form of good manners.” ~ Tom Ford

The stores are not helping the situation…once only a small section, is now a whole department full of various leggings, tops and tanks. Some times that section has more in it than the regular clothing section…and while it used to be in the back, it is now front and center. And it is filled with women dressed in the outfits, frantically looking for more outfits. I just look at them and wonder what makes someone put this on, look in the mirror and say, “Damn I look good, I’m going out to dinner!”

I know I may get some flack on this, but I don’t care. If you look good in your exercise outfit, then good for you! I’m happy for you! Wear it at the gym, wear it on your hike, even wear it to Starbucks for coffee with your workout friends afterward…but don’t wear it to a nice restaurant. If for some unknown reason…say you had a flood and all that’s left of your wardrobe is workout stuff, ok then wear it, but for heavens sake wear a jacket over your skimpy damn top!

There are many articles out there about why we wear what we wear. What the philosophy behind each outfit we wear is telling the world…. But what does wearing a teeny tiny top above the navel(when clearly you don’t have the body for it) and tight and I mean tight leggings mean? What are they trying to say? What message are they putting out there? Ok, I get the whole non body shaming thing…. yes its wonderful they love their body enough to do this…but I’m not even talking about weight here…I’m talking about women with huge breasts that are falling out the sides of the teeny tiny tanks.

“Dress how you want to be addressed.” ~ Bianca Frazier

Have we lost all respect for others or ourselves? Do we not care about the image we are putting out there? And it’s one thing for us to do it. But do we even think about the young girls growing up in todays world? Do we even think about the image we are projecting… telling these girls it is ok to look like this in public. Every now and then I have to tell my 11 year old grand daughter that her outfit is not acceptable if she wants to go away with me. And I went to lunch with my 7 year old grandson recently on Grandparents Day at his school and I was horrified to see what 5 year old girls were wearing to school! Most of it was totally inappropriate workout tops… Did these kids pick out the outfits or do they have mothers who are wearing them and think its fine for a 5 year old to dress this way?

I guess by now(if you are even still reading this) you are thinking I am just an old fuddy duddy… well, I’m done my rant now and I’m sorry if I offended anyone…..Hey, you know what, no I’m not sorry! Everyone is offended these days by something. I’m offended by the woman wearing leggings and a tank top to the restaurant I am paying good money to eat in and…I have to look at her boobs hanging out the entire time. Because she is right smack dab in front of me and I just can’t unsee that..So no I’m not sorry….

I will leave you with this one thought…if we are what we wear…what does that say about us…

“You should dress the way you want the world to treat you.” ~ Stacy London

cats don't care

I Don’t Care!

cats don’t care and neither do I…

cats don't care

Do I look like I care..

Ok, I do care…I care about my family, my friends, the world, the environment…but there are a lot of things I don’t care about these days and I’m just going to let them go. I used to care..a little too much and always wound up getting hurt. I think I have pretty much just stopped caring so I just stop getting hurt…I also believe we need to think about what and who we care about and be very “careful” of those we put our trust in these days. I think I’m like a cat! They just don’t care at all…

I don’t care how much exercise I get. There I said it. I just read something the other day that said if you exercise 5 minutes every few hours each day you’re good! How many people do you know who were in good shape, exercised, ran marathons, ate only healthy stuff, and dropped over dead in their 40’s or 50’s…on the flip side are some of my very own relatives who did everything wrong and lived to be 90!  I’m not saying we shouldn’t do anything to be more healthy I’m just saying there are some things I just don’t want to do to be healthy. We shouldn’t obsess so much about it. I’m not wearing a step counter…or putting a health app on my phone or wearing the wrist thing. I did for awhile and I did get kind of obsessed about it. So I’m not doing it any more. I have enough things telling me what to do and when to do them… I walk every day. I walk because I love to walk. I don’t know how far I walk…I don’t care.. I walk until I don’t want to anymore and then I turn around and walk back.

I don’t care if ice cream isn’t good for me! Life’s short and none of us are getting out alive…so I eat what I want. But I really do try for the most part to eat healthy. I don’t eat after 7pm..I think you need a little time for everything to settle down before going to bed. It helps you sleep better. But if I want ice cream… I’m going to have ice cream. I feel like everything in moderation is always a good call. I don’t eat it every night and when I do get some I usually get those little cups and eat half one night and half the next.

I don’t care if my house is spic and span clean. As long as the tv show Hoarders doesn’t come to my house… even if they would, they could sit on my couch and have plenty of space on my kitchen counter to make dinner… and my dishes are aways washed…so I’m good. I love a place that’s nice and clean and has a place for everything and everything is in it’s place…I just don’t want to be the one that has to do it! Oh and I do make my bed every morning… so there’s that!

“I pretend I don’t care but deep down inside…….I really still don’t care.” ~Unknown

I don’t care about all this stuff with Facebook stealing our information..or allowing someone else to steal and use it. Do you really think no one else is doing this? We all have cell phones and computers and programs and apps on both of them, do you really think these people aren’t stealing our data? Do you think this hasn’t been going on as long as computers have been around and maybe even before that? If people can hack into our government files do you honestly think they haven’t been hacking into ours? I just hope someone that hacked into my mortgage company’s site will pay off my mortgage while they’re in there. Yeah, that would be nice… Nothing in life is free, we have been using social media for free for quite a while now so if you don’t like what is happening don’t use it. I will continue to make the most of it… to stay in touch with family members and friends that don’t live close by. I love that we can stay connected and with FaceTime and Skype on our phones and computers it make me feel like they are here in my house. So yeah, just my opinion..I don’t care.

I don’t care if coffee, wine or whatever else they are saying at the moment isn’t good for you. Because next year a new study will come out and say it is good for you. It happened this year with coffee, there was a study that said they were wrong, something in coffee is good for you….not more than a week later another study comes out and says it isn’t…again…we still, for the most part have free will…if you love/like coffee, drink it! If you love/like wine…have some! Again…everything in moderation.

I don’t care if everyone likes me. I used to care… But not anymore. I am not everyone’s cup of tea and I am well aware of that. I think I am one of those people who you either love or hate…I don’t think there is much of an “in between” with me..I used to be bad enough but as I’ve written before, I have changed since the death of my son. I have little or no filter. However, trivial things I used to worry about no longer bother me. And people who don’t “get” me…don’t get me. I tried very hard over the years to keep some people in my life, but I have learned you can’t make people like you, they either do or they don’t…and having them in your life knowing that you are the one trying to make them like you is worse than not having them in your life at all. Like I said, Life is short and its too short to try and hang onto people who really don’t want to be there. Let them go.

As I mentioned earlier, I do care…I care about people, I care about animals. I care about the homeless, the sick, the poor, and most of all, I care about my family and the friends in my life who are like family… but there are some things I just don’t care about anymore and I’m letting them go….

Also I just wanted to mention…”I Don’t Care” is a song title used by many…from, Hank Williams, Green Day, The Ramones, to Ricky Martin and Elton John and lots more. So many titles of my blog posts are songs…isn’t that weird?

no common sense

Common Sense Is NOT Common…

Do people still have common sense….

no common sense

Be careful…use some common sense…

Standing on the edge of a cliff is something a lot of people do…falling off said cliff is also something a lot of people do. Common sense would tell you not to get this close to the edge…you may fall. But we constantly read stories of people falling off cliffs at the Grand Canyon or other national parks. Why is this? Why don’t people use their common sense? Or do the people that do this not have it? Is common sense something everyone has and some people just refuse to use it? Or is it something just a few have and most do not?

I have been contemplating this for years. I am not sure it is something that can be learned. I think you either have it or you don’t. There are people with PHD’s that have no common sense whatsoever. Or do they have it and think they should just use their brainy powers to figure things out? Back in the 50’s and 60’s did our grandparents ever just look at each other and say, “WTH?”..well I know mine didn’t cause they didn’t swear. But really is this new or has it always been like this? Do some people have it and some just do not.

Why do people fly down the highway at 90 miles an hour, with kids in the car, when the speed limit sign says 50? Why do people still talk on the phone and text while driving now when it is illegal in almost every state? Why do people drive into a lake just because their GPS told them to? Why don’t people use those “new” things on the steering wheel(at least that’s where mine are) that tell the driver in back of them they are turning? Why does everyone blame social media for hacks and stealing their info…people, listen to me….when you take a quiz and it clearly states.. we will use your info…they will use your info…that’s what “we will use your info” means!

“Common sense is not so common” ~ Voltaire 1769

All the above happens everyday.. and just a little common sense could sure help… I don’t know where you get it, not sure if you are born with it or it’s something you can learn. I believe I have it and always had it. Sometimes I haven’t used it and I can vividly recall those times…and know the consequences that came with me deciding not to. Both my grandparents had it and so did my parents. Maybe that’s the thing, if your parents didn’t have common sense then how could you? We learn from watching our parents…even before we go to school..our parents are our teachers. Or at least they should be.

Voltaire knew about common sense back in 1769 and wondered why some didn’t have it or he noticed they didn’t use it. So evidently this isn’t something new, something that just started lately. Although I do think people today are so consumed by their phones and electronic devices that they rely solely on the info they find on there to figure things out. They don’t use their brains and they don’t think. Maybe there should be a class in school today called…Common Sense 101. However, would the kids that really need it, take it? I think the most valuable thing in our body is our brain. We need to use it to think before we act, we need to evaluate everything and how this thing we are planning to do is going to affect people before we do it. Just think before you act! It’s really quite simple.

Does anyone actually think anymore? Working retail and with the public really makes me wonder? Some of the things I see make me lose all hope for civilization as we know it. I feel sad and wonder how we have gotten to this point. And then as I drive home from work something happens…a car coming off a ramp slows down and waits for everyone to go by and the driver in front of me uses his turn signal when he turned at the intersection. Small things, yes… but they renewed my faith in humanity and the world. Common Sense is alive and well!

One last note: for the love of all that’s holy.. could you please not hit “reply all” when you send an email back that has 50 or more people included in the email? Common sense, people, common sense! Thank you!

“Common sense is an instinct, and enough of it is genius.” ~ Josh Billings

game over

Things We Shouldn’t Do After 60!!

really?…don’t tell me what to do!

game over

is it over for us after 60 or should we just do what we want?

I have been reading so many articles on Facebook and in magazines lately stating we shouldn’t do this or that after 50. Well I am over 60, so should I just crawl in a hole and give up? I think we earned the right to do whatever we want at this age…within reason that is..and if we are not breaking any laws. But here are some of the stupid things I have read that we shouldn’t be doing.

Women over 30 shouldn’t have long hair – I remember back in the 60’s Mom telling some of her women friends they should cut their hair. Mom did some of the neighbor ladies hair and she would tell them straight out they shouldn’t have long hair at their age. I think they were probably in their 40’s. What???? Why can’t an older women have long hair if she so desires? Where is it written she can’t? What does having long hair have to do with age anyway? I had long hair way into my late 40’s and several times after that and no one ever mentioned I shouldn’t. Not that I would have listened to them anyway.

Women over 20…, yes you read this right, 20…should not wear leggings –  Ok, I can see why “they” are saying this. Seeing some of the people who do is certainly reason enough to make a case for this, but… I say anyone can wear them…just for the love of all that is holy….wear a long top….very long. And never…never wear nude colored leggings(this is my own rule).

Women over a certain age should not wear pants –  They really didn’t mention the age. Just “over a certain age”… For heavens sake, why? I would rather see a woman in pants than see her scrawny, wrinkly, dried up legs. This may or may not be coming from my own personal experience….and me seeing my own legs in the mirror.. Just again, wear pants that fit and are appropriate to your size.

“People say women shouldn’t have long hair over a certain age, but I’ve never done what everyone says.” ~ Jane Seymour

We should not drink more than 7 glasses of wine a week – That is one per day, (whew..)…but really? I don’t always have that many, some weeks go by without even one glass, but sometimes you just need to “wine”… and aren’t “they” always telling us to have more fruit…like we are supposed to eat several servings a day. Does a glass of wine count as a serving of fruit? I say yes, yes it does.

If we are over 60 we should not eat sweets – Ok, now “they” have just gone too far! Who are “they” anyway? I bet “they” are sitting in their office somewhere with their bag of M&M’s typing away while writing this stuff…and laughing their heads off. I know people that never ate anything bad and… they still died… everything in moderation people..everything in moderation!

We should not do body shots – Don’t ask..

Women over 30 shouldn’t wear blue jeans – I have already discussed this in depth here… Forever In Blue Jeans

“Young. Old. Just words.” ~ George Burns

People over the age of 60 should not, I repeat should NOT use exercise equipment – Ok, this one I love…we are more apt to get hurt and do harm to ourselves by using the equipment at the gym. We are better off walking or just doing exercises. So thank you to the “they” that wrote this one…Now we have a good excuse to “Not” go to the gym. I am not making this up, I saw it…somewhere…

Men over 40 should not wear baseball caps – Ok, this one is just plain ridiculous. I would rather see an older guy in a baseball cap and have it on his head the correct way then see a 12 year old with it on sideways…

There you have it. This is not meant to be taken seriously by any means. Who knows who “they” are, sitting around thinking up these things in the first place. My take on all of this is … Life is short. We should all do what makes us feel good! Like I said before we have earned the right at our age to feel good and enjoy life! But also be careful out there and make sure you aren’t taking too many chances. We look in the mirror and think, who is that old person looking back at us. We don’t feel like we are this age, but we are. There are two things I know for sure that we definitely shouldn’t do at our age… we should not hold onto grudges or live in the past. This will hurt us more than any wine we drink or sweets we eat. So Enjoy yourselves and above all, have fun and dance to the music!

Do you have any good ideas to add to the ones I’ve written? What do you think about this? As always I enjoy reading your comments.

thinking

Some Things I Just Don’t Understand…

I need some answers people…

thinking

so many questions…

As I sit here thinking on this Friday night so many thoughts come into my mind. Those of you who know me know I am always thinking of weird things. Some of which are just too weird to even talk about, but here are some things that have been bothering me lately.

1. Why do women take their boyfriends/husbands shopping with them – I saw a couple last week and really the guy looked like someone had killed his puppy. He was moping along behind his wife and it was all I could do to keep myself from asking…”why, just why are you with her if you are so miserable” and then turn around and ask her, “why did you bring him”….

2. Why after millions of years of people making and eating bread is everyone allergic to it now – Bread was the mainstay of every meal back when I was a kid and  even when my own kids were growing up. Back in the dark ages bread was really the only thing people had besides the meat they had killed that day. But for some reason, it bothers people now.

3. Why suddenly are dogs allowed everywhere – Don’t get me wrong, I love dogs. Truly I do. But do they need to be in a clothing store? Not everyone loves them and some people are even allergic to them. And a there is a whole lot of people who are trying to pass their chihuahuas off as service dogs. Suddenly everyone has a service dog. I know there are people that need them and I don’t have a problem with that. Its the ones who are abusing the whole service dog thing. Really a chihuahua…

4. Why are there warning labels on everything these days – Yes, I know the coffee is hot, I am not an idiot. Yes, I do know to take the plastic wrapper off the cheese before I eat it. A knife that comes with a protective covering telling you “the blade may be sharp and may cut you.”  When did we all become so stupid or so ready to start a lawsuit at any minute over things such as this that we need these warnings?

5. Why are there so many monopolies again – Did we or did we not back in the day stop these from happening so people would be able to get a fair price for what they were using or buying…. Now we have one cable company…one electric company, one healthcare company and one eye care company(at least in my area) Enough already, this needs to stop. We need to be able to shop for the best price and the best service once again.

“Wondering about all the things that I’ll never understand there are some things that you can’t know unless you’ve been there.” ~ Ani Difranco

6. Why do drug companies have so many ads on tv – Do people really see these and think to themselves…”wow, I need this.” And the people that are on the drugs, do they really need to keep seeing the happy healthy people on TV using the drug and think to themselves… why don’t I feel that way?…what’s wrong with me?..why doesn’t this stupid drug work?

7. Why is every day a “something” day now – We used to have Mother’s Day and Father’s Day and then even Grandparents Day. But now every single day is a “day.” We have National Ice Cream Day(isn’t every day), Best Friends Day, Hug a Cat Day, Ice Tea Day, Waffle Day, Jerky Day, Ball Point Pen Day(yes this is a day) and lets not forget Free Donut Day..of which I still never received mine. Why..why does every day have to be a “day?”

8. Why is White House/Black Market still called that – Clearly they forgot this was their name. They always only had white and black clothing…then a few years back they decided to put one color in every now and then. I was in the store a month or so ago and they had every color under the sun. So they either need to change their name or stop have every color. Who comes up with these ideas?

9. Why does every stupid company on earth have my cell phone number – I am on the “Do Not Call” list. Several times..but I still get the annoying spam calls. I don’t answer if I don’t know the number…why do people answer their phones if they don’t recognize the number? And even if you don’t have caller ID, just don’t answer, if someone wants you bad enough they will call back or leave a message. But back to the original question, why does every company and idiot on the planet have my cell phone number…but I can’t remember it to save my life.

10. Why when you are with people and trying to have a conversation they are on their phone texting and checking emails – Yes, I know some people who do this and yet when I text them they don’t text me back.

I know I have a lot more but will save them for another time. Can you think of one that bugs you?

doctors visit

I Hate Going to the Doctor!!!

did I say how much I hate it, but I went and I survived….

doctors visit

I hate stethoscopes too…

Ok, anyone who knows me also knows how much I hate going to the doctor. In fact, I don’t go, never, nada, zip… But with my cataract surgery coming up I had to have an exam and be checked out so I wouldn’t die while they were doing the surgery. I thought about going to one of those walk in clinics but I checked to see what was close by and there was an office right down the street. I called to see if they could do this exam and they said sure but they would need to first add me as a patient. I thought about hanging up and just going to the walk in clinic and then I thought, “you are getting older..ugh.. and maybe just maybe you should have a doctor”.

I know right? I even scared myself with this thought. But I had to have the exam and this place was close by so I scheduled the appointment. After scheduling it I got anxious and scared and considered calling and cancelling the appointment. I mean really anxious. But I went because my daughter assured me I would be fine. But would I?

The reason I hate doctors so much is this…all of my family members that went to the doctor for some little thing all the sudden were diagnosed with some big thing….and then they died. My Dad, My Mom, and my sister… so I am not a big fan of them. In fact I’m not a fan at all. I told the person on the phone, I told the assistant who came in to take my info and vitals and I told the doctor. I was pleasantly surprised when they all understood how I felt and even talked to me about my feelings. They all agreed they would feel the same if this had happened to them.

“Doctors and nurses are people who give you medicine until you die.” ~ Deborah Martin

See I even found this quote above…I don’t know who Deborah is but I think she is my twin. So the visit all in all went pretty well I guess… I have listed just a few things that happened while I was there. and I was there for a long time…an hour and a half to be exact.

  1. First of all they took my weight – I was astounded what I weighed since I never weigh myself and… don’t go to the doctors. I turned around to see if someone had their foot on the scale and asked if I could take all my clothes off and do it again. The assistant just smiled…
  2. Medical History – I have no medical history since I don’t go to the doctors. I had 3 kids, a tubal ligation(look it up) and a partial hysterectomy…all in the 60’s and 70’s…nothing since then and no doctor. I did have one while the kids were little, it was a family practice and he made me come once in awhile too. But when we moved to Maryland I stopped going there.
  3. Blood Pressure – My blood pressure was thru the roof. She knew I was anxious and said we’ll take it again before you leave. I told them I took it in the morning and it was fine. Just believe me…
  4. Having an EKG – I never had an EKG, I knew it had something to do with the heart and honestly this is what scared me the most. I have been having these feelings like my chest was tight and my heart was heavy and so I thought I was having symptoms of a heart attack. I got hooked up to the machine by all the little sticky things and the assistant had to go get something. So I lay there thinking this is it. I am going to be told I need to be on some medication and I have a bad heart. At that exact moment my gum almost went down my throat and I started choking. Thank goodness I got it back up before she came back in and thought I was dying before I even had the EKG. (the EKG was fine)
  5. The Questions- They asked for all the medications I was taking to which I of course said..none! But I explained I do take a lot of vitamins and other stuff. I had to list all the vitamins and how many mgs. of each, which of course I guessed at cause who knows that when you take like 10. And then my apple side vinegar and coconut oil! The best question was when the doctor finally looked at me and said, “exactly when was your last doctor visit?  I honestly didn’t know but guessing when I broke my arm in the 80’s..but that doesn’t even count cause I went to the hospital. So I said I guess the 70’s. Amy(that’s my doctors name, that sounds funny me even saying that) said OMG! She did follow it up with, “well you look good have no problems that I can see or feel so keep doing what you are doing.

Amy did ask that maybe, just maybe if I thought I could manage it, that I could come back for a wellness visit and some blood work…I told her I would think about it. I have given it some thought and I don’t think I will. I am having cataract surgery. That’s more than enough to worry about for a person who hates doctors. I have to have both eyes done and they won’t do them both at the same time. Believe me I asked and even begged… And I’m thinking if doing the one makes a lot of difference I may not even go back for the second one. I don’t like this. I don’t like this at all. I have managed for just about 40 some years to take care of myself by doing natural and alternative things for my body. I am very healthy and I don’t get sick.  I think I will just keep doing that. Its worked well for me so far…

A final note, as I left the office I stopped at the desk and knocked on the window…and when she opened it I told all of the girls that I really didn’t want to come there and again reiterated how much I hate doctors and doctors offices but that they made this visit so much easier for me and were all super sweet. They all said thanks and got big smiles on their faces…even the one who was a tad grumpy smiled. So there’s that!

Here’s my question…Do you hate going to the doctor?

10 Reasons Why I’m Not Married

first and foremost…no one has asked…but still.

wedding rings, no wedding

no thanks, I have plenty of jewelry..

Ok, before all the married people get offended I want to say this…I know and am personally friends with quite a few couples who have been married forever and are very happy. There are happy marriages. I’ve seen them and they are a wonderful thing. People do have them. I however am not one of those people. I was married once (ok twice to the same person so it really doesn’t count). I’ve been there, done that, have the shredded tee shirt. It is a lovely thing if you can pull it off, but many couples in todays world can’t or don’t even want to try.

Why did our parents and grandparents stay together and couples these days can’t? Was is just because they thought they had to? That society or their church would frown upon them getting divorced? I don’t know but I do know I was the first one in my family to get divorced and I was scared to death to tell my parents. They were very understanding and said if you aren’t happy then by all means you shouldn’t stay in the marriage.

I did have one long term relationship after the marriage and that lasted 10 years. But we didn’t get married. I felt deep inside that I would never get married again and  I needed to be honest and true to myself that I really was happier being single. I think I learned a lesson in my early marriage and it taught me who I was and I never wanted to lose that person again.

“if you want to sacrifice the admiration of many men for the criticism of one, go ahead, get married.” ~ Katherine Hepburn

I have talked a little about why I’m not married and never will be again but here are “10 reasons why I am not married.”

1. I really like sleeping by myself – I do, I admit it, I love sleeping by myself. I like having the whole bed to myself and have been doing it for so long now I don’t think I could ever sleep with someone again. Well I mean like really “sleep” with someone. All night.

2. I don’t want to Mother anyone except my kids – I have done this in past relationships, I have become their “mother”.  I have to do their wash, cook them meals and find stuff for them they can’t find like their keys, etc…I have enough trouble finding my own keys…I have kids, I don’t need anymore.

3. I don’t want to feel lonely –  Honestly there were many times I felt lonelier in my marriage and relationships then I do being single. I have friends and family and I am always busy doing something. That wasn’t always the case when I was married,

4. I don’t want to ask permission to do something – I know it is just being polite to ask if they mind if I go somewhere or get together with friends and don’t include them…but I don’t want to have to ask. I just want to do something when I want to do it. I’m a grown up and I should be able to do what I want when I want. And OMG, even if they say they don’t mind but you know they do because they get all whiny and depressed and say…”oh, you are still going to dinner with her tonight?” Um, yes, yes I am…

5. I don’t need someone to “complete” me – Hey I liked “Jerry Maguire” as well as the next person, in fact I loved that movie….but I don’t need anyone to complete me I don’t need to have someone to feel whole. I am pretty damn whole all by myself,

6. I don’t want to lose my friends – Honestly I have more friends now that I am not married than when I was. Maybe the fact that my ex was a sh*t had something to do with it, But I think when you are married you tend to spend time with the person you are married to and some times friendships get cast aside. You don’t mean to but it happens. I love my friends and want to keep them. All of them.

7. I don’t need to be married to have sex – It would be nice if I was indeed having said sex but my point being you don’t need to be married to do it. In fact sometimes the sex gets old and you just do it to do it and get it out of the way because you have done it for months. And you wind up feeling worse than before you did it. So I would rather not. And by the way, you don’t even need a man to have sex….

8. I don’t want to “obey” someone – Really why is that word even still in the marriage vows in this day and age? I tried doing it and I really did “obey” my husband for a while and then I didn’t. When i stopped obeying him is when we started having problems.

9. I don’t believe in fairy tales anymore – Growing up in the 50’s and 60’s we were all led astray by the books we read and movies we saw. You know the ones where  Prince Charming came riding up on his white horse, whisked us away and we “lived happily ever after.” Yeah, like that happens. And actually do we even want that to happen? Well ok, maybe for a day..or night…

10. And I really don’t like the whole “in sickness and in health” thing – Yeah, that whole thing doesn’t work for me. If a man gets sick with a cold, he is dying. I had 3 children naturally so believe me when I say I can’t stand a wimpy, whiny man with a cold. Get over it. I am not here on this earth to be a nurse to you. If I wanted to be a nurse I would have gotten a degree in nursing and been paid for it.

This concludes my list of reasons why I’m not married. I do have more but will save them for another day. I end as usual with a question and a quote. If you are not married and chose not to be, what are some of your reasons?

“There are some who want to get married and others who don’t. I have never had an impulse to go to the altar. I’m a difficult person to lead.” ~ Greta Garbo

free lunch

There’s No Such Thing As A Free Lunch…

or a free donut…apparently!

free lunch

is there such a thing…

I was awakened by a text at 6am yesterday saying the power was out. I rushed, (well maybe I didn’t “rush”, it was 6am after all)outside to talk to the neighbors to see what was going on…and sure enough the power was out in the entire neighborhood. While I was relieved that it wasn’t just my house and I hadn’t inadvertently forgotten to pay the bill…it got my day off to a rather bad start as you might imagine and then to add insult to injury… something else popped in my head… I wouldn’t be able to make coffee!! I waited and watched for the non existent power and of course turned lights on and off in rooms when I knew full well there was no electric. I stood in the kitchen looking down at my Kuerig for help but it didn’t…or couldn’t. No Coffee! No! This can’t be happening…

I waited not so patiently for an hour and that was it. I couldn’t wait any longer so I jumped in the car to make a run for coffee. I offered to get some for all the neighbors as well but they declined. I raced to McD’s and couldn’t believe all the cars in line, they were wrapped around the building 5 times…ok, maybe 2. And then all of a sudden I thought oh my gosh it’s “free donut day”…why not go to DD… Perfect! This made everything ok, I would be rewarded for having to go through all of this with a “free donut,” The line there was not quite so long and I decided to get an egg sandwich along with my coffee and added a glazed donut as my freebie. I had a gift card from a friend and it paid for the whole thing. Score!

The smell of the coffee wafted through the air the whole way back to the house and I could barely contain myself from drinking it before I got home to add my own creamer and sweetener. I got my coffee ready and pulled out my egg and cheese sandwich, looked under the napkins and what did I see….well I’ll tell you what I didn’t see…a donut. No free donut, it was very clearly listed on my receipt. Glazed donut – Free Donut – D Day(whatever that meant, I guess donut day) But I didn’t have a donut. I didn’t have a free donut or a paid for donut. I had no donut at all. And now all I really wanted besides my beautiful cup of coffee was a damn donut.

“Donuts. Is there anything they can’t do?” ~ Matt Groening

I pulled all the napkins out and dumped the bag on the table thinking some how the missing donut would magically appear. But no! There was no donut. And I didn’t feel like running back down there with tears streaming down my face to tell them I didn’t get my “free donut”. And then there is this…would they in fact even believe me? I could see their faces when I told them the news…”oh sure lady we’ll give you another “free” donut, so sorry”…all of them laughing hysterically because the crazy lady with wild hair ate her donut quickly in the car and came back for another….

So I drank my coffee, which was wonderful by the way and ate my egg and cheese sandwich, which was ok…and all the while longed for my donut. Did you ever not even think you wanted something until you couldn’t have it and then it was the most desired thing in the world and you just had to have it no matter what. You wanted that  “thing” whatever it was, more than anything. Yes, it was just a donut, but it was so much more. It was what that donut represented. I have had so much loss and so much taken away from me that this just was the icing on the cake…or donut. You can’t not give me my free donut…damn it!

I did try justifying the whole thing by telling myself…this is the universe telling you that you didn’t need a donut. Yeah, whatever universe…shut it!! So I sat down and wrote an email to DD and told them what had happened on “free donut day” as tears streamed down my cheeks.  I will wait to see what they write back, if indeed they do. Because of course “I’m the crazy lady that ate her free donut in the car and decided to try and get another one for free by lying about the whole incident”.  I will let you know what happens.

Just remember, nothing is free….everything comes with a cost.

donuts are not free

all I ever wanted…and btw, she needs a manicurist..

Did you ever not even think you wanted something until you couldn’t have it? The day started out being about my beloved coffee and not be able to have it and quickly ended up about some sugar-laden piece of dough that I was denied and wanted so so much. How did this all even happen?
